Today my children had the opportunity to visit a local museum with one of their favorite art teachers. She runs an art studio for children where they are free to create with a variety of materials. This trip was organized to give the group an idea of what it’s like to visit a larger art museum.
At the end of the tour, the children sat by the river and painted what they saw. They were given palettes with only red, blue, yellow, and white and were instructed to mix their own colors. Here’s what my little Impressionists created…

It’s Friday. And once again it’s raining. Have I stepped into Groundhog Day or something? I really wish the sun would come out because I have some planting to do this weekend. This rain is also killing my mood. Big time.

My weekend of bed rest consisted of me on the couch playing remote control commando. The sun was out, my family was out, but I was unfortunately stuck inside with TV. It wasn’t all bad, like when I stumbled upon Clueless right before Christian arrived. Or this morning, when I actually found a movie on Showtime that was just starting and looked interesting enough to maintain my focus; i.e. I didn’t really look at my phone the entire time. (Beyond the Candelabra)
But there were some scary parts, thank you back to back episodes of Intervention. (I don’t recommend doing that- now I don’t want my children to even take advil). And I know I lost brain cells watching The Kardasians, although Kourtney is funny as hell. Thankfully today, Juno was on, as well as Garden State. You just can’t get better than that. And hopefully I will get back to my normal life of not watching TV tomorrow.

Today is a post of bullets.
* Right now I’m watching Amare Stoudemire do his Basketball Dancey Dance on Yo Gabba Gabba. My daughter already left the room too.
* I put training wheels on my 3 year old’s hand-me-down bike. She’s learning to not be afraid of falling. She gets that from me.
* Today I thought about Mumford and Sons and I would like their music played at my funeral. Just thinking ahead.
* I’m trying to eat a more plant based diet. Unlike before, my husband is on board.
* I still can’t fold a fitted sheet nor do I have any desire to actually learn.
* I really want to open a bottle of wine, but it’s only 4:16pm. Sigh
* Who knew there were so many freakin medical words. Seriously. Common forms (mostly latin), paired with suffixes and sometimes prefixes. But I now know what a cholecystectomy is.
* My garden is giving me anxiety. It’s a box of weeds with a few tomato plants that happen to have sprouted from the compost soil.
* Having a blended family has many ups and downs.

Gardening
When I was little, we never had a garden. I remember visiting my Great Grandmother and Grandfather and seeing their garden; mostly grapes, tomatoes, and peppers, but there was never a desire on my family’s part to have one of our own. I’m of Sicilian descent, so you figure gardening would be in my blood, right? Now that I think of it, my grandparents never had a garden either. I’m not sure if it was 1st generation mentality of trying to live like Americans, but I want to make sure that my girls grow up knowing how to grow their own food.
Herbs are one of the easiest things to grow. Here my munchkin is helping me plant basil. We use basil in almost everything, so this is essential in our house. We also planted parsley. My oregano survived the winter and is ready to roll. I just need some rosemary, pineapple sage, thyme, and cilantro. I let my little one put in as many seeds as she wanted. This should be an interesting experiment!! I’ve learned that I can always replant, so extra herbs can go into the backyard garden if necessary.
Next to the pots of herbs, we have a little strawberry patch. I planted a few plants there years ago simply because our dog uses the backyard for a toilet. I’ve been surprised every year with more and more plants. This year I read up on how to get the best strawberries (on pinterest of course!), and this is our first yield! Usually the bugs attack all of them or we only had one or two viable berries. This year I’ve already had two pickings!! They aren’t super sweet, so that will be next year’s project. I’m sure it has to do with the quality of soil. We compost in our house, so I’m going to bring up some of that rich soil soon. (Tomatoes will be planted next!)
Gardening and composting have become verbs in my house. While they are chores for all of us to complete, I hope they are not seen as such. I don’t want my girls to view tending the vegetables with the same mindset they have about making their beds. I want them to learn a skill that will stay with them forever. Now more than ever it is important for us all to learn to grow our own food. You know, because of zombies. :-)

Someone recently asked me if I regretted my decision to quit teaching and go back to school. My answer was no for 3 wonderful reasons. One of those reasons is in the picture above.
Today I was able to volunteer in her classroom. Two weeks ago I gave a lecture on H2O. In a few weeks I’ll chaperone field day.
So, no, I do not regret leaving a job that made other children more important than my own. I am very happy being the mom that can sometimes volunteer. It suits me perfectly.
